Evidently in Flint MI the mayor closed down a number of fire stations and laid off a number of fire fighters. The end result? More than 50 fires in one week.
I would be interested to know just how many of these fires are a) arson and b) structures that have been or are going to be in foreclosure. Ex-student and co-author Paul D. is supposedly working on an empirical test of whether arson is more likely for properties in foreclosure. That is a classic Beckerian economics of crime story and I hope he has success with the project.
