Here in North Carolina there is a new "service" that provides a "free" cell-phone for those with lower incomes. Of course, it isn't a free phone, I get to help pay for it.
The service offers a free phone, service, free voice mail, caller ID, call waiting and 68 minutes per month.
Here's the best part. Unused minutes roll over from month to month, so after 12 months (if a poor person could wait that long) a "subscriber" would have 12x68 = 816 minutes or 13.6 hours of time for chit-chat. At this point, the individual would have free cellphone service with more time than most $80 plans.
Perhaps we should spend more money on helping those who claim hunger, but we are definitely not in the throes of a depression if this type of program is surviving.
