Try to create a professional football league that will compete with the National Football League. Such is the plan for the UFL - The United Football League - which is to start play this October with four (!) rather than the originally planned eight teams. The four teams will play in Las Vegas-Los Angeles, New York-Hartford, Orlando, and San Francisco-Sacramento. The travel expenses alone would seem to be extremely high, but with only four teams in the league how long until the home town fans get tired of yet another game against the same opponent?
I will go out on a limb here and predict that this league will fold within the first three years. The league will fold for the same reason other rival leagues to the NFL will fail - no media contract, low quality play, smaller venues and audiences.
I will also predict that somehow the UFL will get government financing. Why do I predict that? Well, from today's Sporting News Daily:
Despite the scaled back first season, the UFL continues to attract new money, including an additional $30 million from a consortium of backers that includes financier Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).Oh.
Three years is being generous. The XFL lasted for only one season. It had a lot of money, free advertising in the WWF (now WWE) to encourage cross-over fans, and it offered a very different sort of football than the NFL.Post a Comment
