I hate being right, but I predicted this the night after the election last November. The Democrats are scratching, clawing, stealing, cheating, and nominating their way to the filibuster proof number of seats in the Senate. From Salon.com:
Both Roll Call and the Huffington Post are reporting that President Obama is thinking of nominating Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) to be secretary of Commerce. There'd be a special significance to this move, if indeed the president does make it: New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, who'd appoint Gregg's replacement, is a Democrat. He could appoint a fellow Democrat to replace Gregg, which would -- assuming Al Franken is declared the victor of his race when the legal battle over that seat is finished -- give the party 60 seats in the Senate, a theoretically filibuster-proof majority. It would be nice if the Governor of NH would replace a Republican senator with another Republican senator, but it probably won't happen.
I suggest that the costs of Lynch leaving to be the Secretary of Commerce are too high. The Republicans would do well to keep him in the Senate at,if not all, at least substantial costs.
If the Democrats get the full 60 votes, then Katie bar the door.
