some perspective

As we approach Dec. 7 - Pearl Harbor Day, it is interesting to juxtapose our current 5 year experience of war against that of WWII.

For instance, how many people have heard of or remember the Battle of Tarawa in the Pacific theater? 3,700 marines killed and woundedand 4,700 Japanese and Koreans killed in 76 hours of fighting.

What is rather sobering is that very few would be able to identify the battle today. Granted, there are battles of WWII and WWI that entailed much more death and, ultimately, insanity. Hoewever, remembering that at times of war things have been far, far worse is good for some perspectuve.
