What's up with the weird late call in the Pitt/SD game?

I heard the last play called on the radio and the subsequent confusion surrounding the play was not clarified until later. However, at the time I wondered about the spread and whether the reversed call would have implications for the line.

Of course it did, in a big way. Those betting on the Steelers might have lost approximately $32 million to the book makers!! Ouch.

Here's another little quip from this interesting article:
Plus, the reversal meant the first 11-10 final score in the entire history of the NFL.

For real - the first time!?! Wow, I didn't realize we were in such historic times.
