Blogger learns to ride a bike at 39

Last night my buddy Richard came over and we put the clipless pedals on my LeMond Alpe d'Huez. We stayed in the neighborhood as I learned how to start and stop with my feet connected to the machine.

After a few in and outs, I got crazy and slammed on both sets of brakes, coming to an immediate stop.

I immediate fell over in a spectacular manner.

Thus, at 39 (as of tomorrow) I now seem to be in need of training wheels again.

In all seriousness, however, it is amazing how much more power you get out of clipless pedals over the platform pedals. I was billy-goating the hills in our neighborhood with much less power expenditure.

Like everything, if all you do is push, push, push, you eventually reach diminishing returns. Now that I am pushing and pulling, I look forward to my first time out on the road. However, for the next week or so, I see myself riding in the safe confines of my neighborhood as I learn how not to fall over.
