As we head into the 2008 election cycle the rhetoric is getting rather thick and, frankly, a bit terrifying. Perhaps everyone (including the candidates!) would do well to sit back with some good ol' MP3s off the Founding Documents pod-blog, if only to remind us three things. First, that the Constitution was created for distinct and vital reasons, and it wasn't intended to be treated as a zoning law. Second, the best speeches and writings of two hundred and thirty years ago were written and delivered for adults who had the ability and (more importantly?) the desire to think. Third, after listening to these speeches and writings you realize that the (revealed) intellects of the people running for president today seem to come up rather short.
Here are a few of my favorites off the site:
Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death
Federalist Paper #51
President Washington's Farewell Address - perhaps especially pertinent these days.
