My habit of reading the paper from 100 years ago has impressed upon me how much like today's China the United States was. We were growing very fast, had incredibly cheap and abundant labor, had relatively few regulations on industrial activity, and ultimately ran afoul of the sensibilities of a large number of countries in the world.
Stephen Mihm at the Boston Globe has a similar take on things.
