Anyone looking for a simple term project for an econometrics class might consider looking at this map and accompanying article concerning consumption taxes in the various United States.
Interesting and quick questions to ask:
1. How much do cigarette sales decline when you raise your cigarette taxes higher than your neighboring states?
2. Do changes in the sales tax influence taxable sales?
3. What is the national "Laffer Curve" for cigarette taxes?
I am sure there are many more...
