Over at English-Russia is an amazing archive of very ugly Soviet-era cars and trucks. The trucks are so ugly that they could only have been the result of state planning - they would never have survived a true market test.
Another archive shows a subway in Kiev that is flooded but still in operation. Isn't that asking for cholera or some other bug to thrive?
It is simply amazing to me how the Soviet system managed to stay afloat as long as it did. Unfortunately, the aftermath hasn't been very pretty.
