Interesting emissions stats

From EIA is this report with the following tidbits:

Comments:
I wonder how much of this has to do with Hurricane Katrina.

When an external event (supply shock) like a hurricane increases energy prices, people (specifically drivers) consume less gasoline and thus emit less pollution.

The irony here would be that something as tragic as Hurricane Katrina may have also resulted in this seemingly positive externality.
