The $102,000 Pedometer

A few weeks ago, Cheap Stingy Bargains advertised that the AARP was offering free pedometers. I like free, and I wanted a pedometer, so I signed up (page here, don't know if it's still active).

My pedometer arrived today, as promised. I took some pictures of the packaging and its contents:

Now here's what I find somewhat painful to contemplate. Over the past 10 years I have paid approximately $102,000 (give or take a little) into the Social Security System, of which AARP members are the large majority of recipients. In return for my contributions, the AARP has oh-so-nicely provided me with a one dollar (if that) pedometer, about 25 cents in packaging, and 87 cents in postage. It is unfortunate, but that might be all the return us folks from Generation X (and later) will see.
