When good intentions yield bad ideas

As I am an academic, you might think that anything that ensures the future of my industry I would support. However, I am not excited in the least by the Federal or state governments intervening any more in the higher education industry. The government has done a reasonable job with K-12 (although the private market might well have done better), but I am a big fan of leaving higher education to voluntary enrollment and school choice (on both the demand and supply side).

Therefore, I cringed when I read about a proposal in Maine to force all high school graduates to apply to at least one college in order to receive their high school diploma. This is a bad idea all around.
