If it is true that the Clinton administration stood in the way of possibly preempting 9/11 because of fears that those with green cards (who do not vote) would be off-put during the 2000 election will any heads roll? Initial story here.
If the story is true, there are significant implications. First, our intelligence network was at least somewhat successful in the pre-9/11 era, which might mitigate the need for the USA PATRIOT Act. Second, perhaps there are fewer terrorist cells in the U.S. than has been feared/predicted. Finally, those in the government at the time were not our delegates nor trustees - they were simply out for their own power and enrichment and willing to take unnecessary risks with the lives of U.S. citizens in the process.
If a would-be terrorist has to be a non-U.S. citizen without a green card in order to be considered enough of a threat to be detained, deported, or otherwise foiled in their attempts to inflict damage to this nation, then we are in deep trouble.
