Some reasons not to live in DC?

From the Washington Post comes a picture of murders thus far in 2005 (and we are not even to the end of July?!) What's the deal up there? I have known people who have lived in DC and loved it. I have known people who lived in DC and hated it. Personally, I have only visited a few times and therefore don't really know the good areas from the bad.

However, this graph does give you an idea of where the trouble lies - evidently right down on Pennsylvania Avenue!! The folks in DC are clearly out of touch with the rest of the country on most things, but they are living and working in the middle of a war zone. You would think that the folks in DC would have a bit of empathy for the folks in Iraq.

The graph below depicts murders but doesn't reveal anything about the nature of the crime - victim, perp, time of day, circumstances, etc. Nevertheless, it is scary that so much death is taking place in such a small square area. Kinda looks like the casualty maps of Baghdad - alas, I can't find one for comparison at the moment.

This is really over the top.

I live in DC and it's not a war zone, despite the pretty map. It's a wonderful place to live and you ought to visit.

And out of touch? Compared to what?

I paint with a broad brush on purpose. Rhetoric flows about Iraq and Bagdhad but little is spent on Washington, D.C. With that number of homicides taking place in a nine square mile area, I think most people not living in DC would wonder what is going on.

I would suggest that the folks in Congress who are quick to claim disaster and defeat in Iraq should take a look in their backyard.
