Relish this!!

From AdAge Daily (reg req'd):

NEW FOOD MAGAZINE WELCOMES PRODUCT PLACEMENTS
'Relish' Offers Advertisers Opportunity to Buy Into Editorial Content
July 21, 2005
By Nat Ives

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- A planned food magazine called Relish will let marketers buy brand mentions in recipes prepared by the editorial staff and buy product placement among staff-recommended kitchen and home gadgets. Advertisers can pay to have thier products included in the editorial content of 'Relish.'

I have a sneaking suspicion that this type of thing goes on a lot more often than we know about. How is it that the house that purchases a lot of advertising in Wine Spectator or Wine Enthusiast just happens to get a rave review that month? Product placement is clearly valuable for advertisers because they are willing to pay for it. However, paying to get your tuna fish mentioned in a recipe? I rarely follow recipes to the letter and definitely wouldn't buy the recommended tuna fish, but I can see how easily other people might fall into the trap.

Alas, the matrix is all around us and we cannot escape.
