Sixty years ago today (it is 12:21am in Texas), a bunch of young kids jumped out of planes, climbed seemingly insurmountable cliffs, dared to challenge Hitler's Atlantic Wall, and even though the odds seemed long and there was almost certain death awaiting, managed to gain a toehold on the European mainland.
I am constantly amazed by the bravery that the American soldier has and continues to exhibit relative to his contemporaries, whether it is Gettysburgh, Cold Harbor, the Argonne Forest, the sands of North Africa, the Italian peninsula, Omaha, Utah, and Gold Beaches, the Ardennes Forest, the march to Bataan, the hills of Korea, Vietnam, Kosovo, and now the sands of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan. I wonder if it is because of the unique freedoms that we enjoy in this country that makes our fighting men what they are.
I wish I could answer to myself whether I would have been able to climb on an LST on June 6, 1944. I want to say that I would have, but I don't know. On this day, it is worth remembering that mere mortals undertook Operation Overlord but their actions made them immortal.
